where the Shannon River leaves Lough Derg and rushes

The descending dove is a reference to the Bible verse, Mark 1:10,
“And when Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens
split open and the Holy Spirit descending like a dove on him.”

The dramatic original of this quaint cross can be found among the ruins of the Franciscan friary Slane Abbey. It features graceful vines of shamrocks and a heart at its center.  Along the sides of this cross are the words of a traditional Irish blessing: “May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks.”
Its smaller size is ideal for placement in the casket.
